In March 2019 the carabinieri and the Palermo DDA arrested 25 people on multiple charges related to mafia membership and collaboration. Amongst the accused was the former regional parliamentary representative, Paolo Ruggirello.
Several Italian publications that covered Fogler’s killing speculated that the shooting was a “killer’s baptism,” and that the perpetrator killed him as a “kind of test” to “get expertise with a weapon.”
As they intensified their search for Matteo Messina Denaro, authorities in Italy detained 35 people in an operation against suspected mafia members.
According to the Carabinieri, their investigations focused on money laundering, drug trafficking, illegal gambling, and other crimes.
