Texas Governor Ted Abbott designates Mexican Cartels as Terrorist Organizations

Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to step up its efforts to combat Mexican drug gangs, whom he holds responsible for bringing millions of doses of the narcotic fentanyl into Texas.

In a new executive order, Abbott directed the state police to prioritize the gathering of information on cartels, look into gangs in Texas that aid in smuggling of people and drugs, and seize any assets the cartels are shipping back to Mexico, including cash.

“Fentanyl is a clandestine killer, and Texans are falling victim to the Mexican cartels that are producing it.”

This week, Abbott also wrote to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, requesting that they list various Mexican cartels as international terrorist groups. With this designation, federal prosecutors would be able to bring criminal terrorism charges against cartel members.

The governor also labelled the Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, albeit this designation is mostly symbolic because Texas lacks its own laws against terrorism. According to Abbott, fentanyl usage killed more Americans than terrorist attacks.
